  Abstract

In this paper, we propose a ToF and distance measurement algorithm using the differentiation method for UWB signals. ToF, the point where the instantaneous rate of change of the signal is maximized is detected, confirming that the time increment setting plays a critical role in this process. The time increment is optimized using the gradient descent method, and experiments are conducted based on the values. Experimental results show that the differentiation method exhibits lower performance than the cross-correlation method and the FFT-based cross-correlation method when the SNR is below 5 dB. However, when the SNR exceeds 5 dB, all three methods exhibit similar performance, and in high SNR environments, the RMSE differences among the methods become negligible Furthermore, in a multipath fading environment, the proposed method demonstrates comparable performance to conventional methods when the SNR is above 15 dB. In terms of computational complexity, the differentiation method demonstrates lower computational cost compared to the cross-correlation and FFT-based cross-correlation methods. Additionally, in terms of spatial complexity, the differentiation method exhibits superior memory efficiency compared to both conventional cross-correlation and FFT-based cross-correlation methods. These results indicate that the differentiation method ensures real-time processing performance while maintaining distance estimation accuracy.
