  Abstract

Recently, massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems have been touted as a core technology for 6G mobile communication systems. Also, Rician fading channels are extensively considered as spatial channel models reflecting the line-of-sight (LoS) component which is a physical characteristic of massive MIMO systems, millimeter wave band systems, and non-terrestrial network. In particular, it is vital to reduce feedback overhead for channel state information (CSI) acquisition and backhaul overhead for CSI sharing in cooperative massive MIMO systems with limited feedback. In this study, we propose an adaptive feedback scheme to reduce the feedback overhead and backhaul overhead by leveraging the band-structured non-homogeneous codebook for effective quantization of a Rician fading channel. By analyzing the impact of the quantization error on achievable sum rate according to the magnitude of the LoS component in intra-cell user channels and other-cell interfering channels, we derive the optimal feedback bit allocation in a closed-form. Numerical results show that the proposed scheme considerably increases the average sum rate compared to the existing schemes.
