This can be resolved by providing guidance to autonomous vehicles based on advanced situational awareness of road infrastructure. This paper describes a road condition recognition system based on a wireless sensor network that collects and transmits road sensing information from infrastructure sensors so that autonomous vehicles can determine road condition information. The results of designing and implementing a road situation awareness system based on a wireless sensor network are described. A test bed was built at the roundabout of Korea National University of Transportation, and various sensor information such as road surface condition information, visibility, local weather conditions, and occurrence of falling objects were collected through a wireless sensor network and verified through a monitoring system.
